Pre-Barcelona

Got back from Barcelona. Very fun. Saw all the Gaudi stuff. Stayed in a real hostel for the first time. An interesting combination of fun and creepiness. But, I did meet a guy from California who just graduated from Deep Springs. It's an alternative education school in the middle of California. If you're bored, don't want to work or study or just need something to read... Deep Springs.

It's a 2-year college/cattle ranch. The school has 2 classes of 13 students. Students are required to work on the ranch for a minimum of 20 hours/week. Basically it sounds like a collection of the smartest 19 and 20 year olds in the nation. The kid I talked to seemed like he was mid-20s but he could've been younger. Easily one of the smartest, most well spoken people I've met. The students handle everything, from admissions to hiring professors. There are more professors applying to teach here than students applying for enrollment. This kid is taking a year off to travel and work on a winery in France, then he's going to Yale to study Public Policy and Philosophy. Almost half of graduates go to Harvard, Chicago, Yale, Brown or Columbia. Pretty much everyone from DS can go where they like. Also, in the last 5 years they've had 10 national scholarship winners (Rhodes, Cooke, Truman, Goldwater). So they seem pretty legitimate.

Definitely read about it.
